DEPRESSION
Despite what may be believed, depression is not something that
can merely be "snapped out of" if one is willing. It's not that
easy. Like a person with diabetes or heart disease, one must learn
how to recognize depression and manage it throughout their life. It
is not a personal weakness and therefore is nothing to feel
embarassed or ashamed about. There are many ways to treat
depression and keep it from becoming a life-threatening disease.
Depression is a serious medical condition that can affect your
life in many ways, including your ability to function on a
day-to-day basis both mentally and physically.
Symptoms you may experience include emotional (sadness, loss of
interest in once-enjoyed activities), as well as physical
(unexplained tiredness, general loss of energy). These interfere
with your daily activities and routines including, appetite, sleep,
and work.
Symptoms of depression: (according to
Pfizer, Inc.)
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Restlessness or decreased activity that is noticable to others
- Loss of energy or feeling tired all the time
- Difficulty in concentrating or making decisions
- Feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt
- Repeated thoughts of death or suicide
For a doctor to diagnose depression, these symptoms must have
lasted at least 2 weeks and be troublesome enough to cause a person
distress or interfere with work, social life, or daily functioning.
Depression that goes untreated may last months and even years and
deprive one of a productive life.
Sufferers of untreated depression may find their lives affected in
many ways:
(according to Pfizer, Inc.)
- Difficulty with relationships, friends, family, and coworkers
- Reduced self-esteem
- Poorer work performance
- Little energy for (or interest in) personal projects and hobbies
- Isolation from others
- Less interest in life
With appropriate treatment, most people can recover from
depression and resume a normal life.
Depression is treatable.
